New Delhi, Nov 17: Demanding that the trial in the Babri Masjid demolition case be conducted in accordance with the original CBI chargesheet, CPI(M) today said the Uttar Pradesh government's latest affidavit justifying dropping of conspiracy charges against the accused was "contrary" to the stand adopted by the ruling Samajwadi Party. Describing the state government's stand as "surprising and very unfortunate", the party polit buro said in a statement that "the Samajwadi Party had been consistently taking the stand against the dilution of the original chargesheet and for bringing the culprits to book. The present affidavit is contrary to this stand taken so far."
Pointing out that the latest affidavit stated that there was no conspiracy by any political party in the demolition case, it said the original chargesheet filed and admitted by the special court in Lucknow in 1997 had charged the accused, including Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, with conspiracy under Section 120(B) of the Indian Penal Code.
"To see that justice is done in this important case involving national unity and maintenance of the secular order, it is imperative that the trial be conducted with the original chargesheet," the party said.
