New Delhi, Sept 25: German carrier Lufthansa announced its first-ever live ticket auction in India today through mobile SMS to various destinations in Europe and North America.
Stating that it had launched several live internet auctions in India earlier, Lufthansa's new general manager for South Asia, Werner Heesen said "this is a logical move to cater to the wireless media, given the substantial growth of mobile subscribers in the country".

The participants would be required to SMS 'luft' to 8558 on September 25 to take part in the auction, leading to a series of interactive SMS messages on further steps, he said in a release.
The destinations to which the tickets would be auctioned include New York, London and Frankfurt.
Currently, Lufthansa connects New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore to Germany with 23 flights a week.

Heesen, who was appointed earlier this week as general manager (passenger sales) for India and director for South Asia, would overseee Lufthansa's sales and marketing activities in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
