Shillong, Aug 26: Meghalaya required 350 to 400 mw power for its daily needs but its installed capacity was 180 mw, state's Power Minister R L Tariang said while underlining the need for harnessing solar energy. Meghalaya was a power surplus state till a few years ago, but now it was facing shortage of power, Tariang said adding, due to this the government could not issue licence to many companies seeking to set up industries here.
Speaking at the inauguration of a solar shop here yesterday, he said although the installed capacity of the state was 180 mw, it actually generated 140-150 mw.
Stressing the need for harnessing non-conventional energy to meet power requirement, Tariang said both the policy-makers and the people should be convinced about the utility of this alternative source. Bureau Report
