NEUSTIFT (AUSTRIA), JULY 23: The body of a Canadian ice hockey player who vanished
in 1989 has been discovered high on a glacier in the Alps.
Duncan MacPherson, who was a first round draft pick for
the NHL team the New York Islanders in 1984, was 23 when he
vanished in 1989 while on a holiday in Neustift, Austria.
His body was discovered by a worker on the Stubaier
glacier who spotted yellow clothing half buried in the ice
while operating a snow plough. Gnther Mller reported the
find to police and then returned with other workers to recover
the body.
Deputy police chief Rober Koch said MacPherson's identity
was confirmed by the documents he had in his pockets. He added
there were two people still listed as missing in the area.
MacPherson did not eventually play in the NHL for the
Islanders and his contract ran out in 1989.
