Aizawl, Dec 07: Major opposition parties in Mizoram has decided to unitedly fight the seat to be vacated by Chief Minister Zoramthanga to force an early mid-term poll in the state. Zoramthanga had contested and won two seats - Kolasib and Champai in the November 20 assembly polls in the state helping his party Mizo National Front win 21, just one more than half the total 40 seats in the house.

In the event of the defeat of the MNF candidate in the seat to be vacated by Zoramthanga, the party would lose absolute majority in the house and necessitate an early mid-term poll, the opposition said. Opposition Congress, Mizoram People's Conference (MPC), Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) leaders at a meeting decided on the strategy yesterday.

The meeting was attended by state PCC chief Lal Thanhawla, MPC's Lalhmingthanga and ZNP's Lalduhawma yesterday.

In the initial agreement, the three leaders decided to ensure mid-term poll and forge pre-poll alliance in the 'coming impending elections' by fielding all the successful candidates of the three parties. ''Other modalities would be worked out by the three party coordination committee'', the sources said.

The opposition won a total 18 seats - Congress 12, MPC 3, ZNP 2 and Mara Democratic Front (MDF) 1.
