Jenin, Oct 05: The radical Palestinian movement Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for today's attack by a female suicide bomber in the northern Israeli port city of Haifa, in an anonymous telephone call to a news agency. The attack was carried out by 18-year-old Hanadi Tayssir Jaradat from the West Bank town of Jenin, a spokesman said.

Islamic Jihad would later publish a more detailed claim of responsibility for the attack which killed 19 people as well as the bomber, he added. The bomber's brother, 20-year-old Fadi Jaradat, and her cousin Saleh Jaradat, who were both jihad members were killed by the Israeli Army in Jenin on June 12, according to the same source.

The al-Quds brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad, had vowed in a statement after the June 12 killings that it would avenge the Israeli "crimes". Bureau Report
