Chennai, Mar 15: Free power supply to farmers in Tamil Nadu will be snapped from today following the new tariff of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission. Releasing the first tariff order of the commission yesterday, its secretary R Balasubramaniam told reporters that the new rates would come into effect from Sunday. Farmers would henceforth have to pay 20 paise per unit if their services were metered and Rs 250 per HP per annum if the services were unmetered, he said. The commission also imposed a hefty hike of 22.13 per cent on domestic consumers and a marginal hike of 6.69 per cent on high tension consumers. The tariff revision would mop up Rs 1,398.80 crore in one year, Balasubramaniam said.
