Nagpur, Sept 17: The Supreme Court has appointed a special committee headed by advocate general of Maharashtra Goolam Vahanvati to look after the functions of Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa (BCMG). A division bench of apex court consisting Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice B N Agarwal on September 07 passed orders in response to a special leave petition (SLP) filed by a city lawyer Anoop Singh Parihar, challenging the extension granted to BCMG by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

The apex court has specifically asked BCI not to include any of the members of outgoing body of the state bar council while constituting the committee, Parihar told a news agency here today. The panel, headed by Vahanvati, includes Advocate General of Goa A N S Nadkarni, advocates B K Vyas and Sadashivrao Deshmukh from Mumbai, and would look after the functions of BCMG with immediate effect.

As per Section 8 of Advocates Act 1961, the term of state bar council is five years and the previous term expired on March 18. On a request from state council, the BCI granted extension from April 25 on the ground that electoral roll could not be prepared.

Parihar's petition was dismissed by Nagpur bench of Mumbai High Court, which he later challenged in the SC, urging to declare extension illegal and against provision of Advocates act. Parihar, who appeared in person, had alleged that names of some 37,000 advocates had been deleted from preliminary electoral roll with an oblique motive of depriving them from voting.
