Chandigarh, June 17: Peeved with the spotlight on the Mercedes car gifted to him by an alleged scamster, legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev today accused the media of blowing the issue out of proportion while maintaining that he had not committed any mistake by accepting the gift. "Just because I accepted the car as a gift from someone whose credentials I was not aware of does not mean that I committed any mistake," Kapil Dev said.
"If anybody gives you a gift and later on you find that the person is a smuggler or a criminal. Will you be blamed for accepting that gift?" he asked the reporters present at a function where the former skipper had come to promote a two-wheeler brand. "Will you go to the government and say that a wrong person has given me this gift?" he questioned.
Kapil Dev was angry over the continued media focus on the car, which was gifted to him by Zaheer Rana, prime accused in a multi-level marketing scam in Gujarat. Rana, as well as the car, is in police custody now. Kapil Dev said media was unnecessarily focusing on negative issues.
"Did anyone of you report when I was gifted this car? This case is being investigated for the last 30 days. Did the media report it earlier as it is doing now?" he asked. Bureau Report
