London, Sept 30: Ten men, all believed to be Algerians, were arrested today on suspicion of involvement in terrorism, in a dramatic swoop that underscored persistent fears of a terrorist attack on British soil.
Six were nabbed in coordinated dawns raids on homes in north, east and southeast London, while four others were picked up in northwestern Manchester, the metropolitan police said.
They were all being held and questioned by anti-terrorist branch officers under section 41 of Britain's draconian terrorism act 2000, which refers to alleged involvement in the planning or execution of terrorist acts.
"The operations are part of ongoing and extensive inquiries by the anti-terrorist branch into alleged terrorist activities," a spokeswoman for the metropolitan police told newspersons. "Searches are currently being carried out at all residential premises," she added.
The 10 men were identified only by the letters a through J, with four of those in London, and one in Manchester, described as being in their 30s. No ages were released for the others.
The arrests underscored concern that Britain remains vulnerable to terrorists, more than two years after the September 11, 2001 attacks against the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.
