Varanasi, Oct 14: Police today arrested 4000 Vishwa Hindu Parishad workers from the railway station, who were on their way to participate in the proposed "Ram Bhakta Sammelan" in Ayodhya on October 17. Two temporary jails have been set up here to accommodate the detainees.
Meanwhile, the last batch of VHP karsewaks left Gujarat today to take part in the rally. The Uttar Pradesh government, on its part, is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that the proposed rally does not take place. The twin cities and Ayodhya-Faizabad have been turned into virtual fortresses by deploying 60 companies of para-military forces.
The administration is continuing with its crackdown on the VHP activists. Police rounded off over 1100 Ayodhya-bound activists of the saffron outfit yesterday.
Nearly 450 people were picked up from trains at Ayodhya and Faizabad railway stations, 400 in Varanasi and 350 in Allahabad as authorities hinted at taking Army's help if the situation so warranted.

As the crackdown against VHP activists continued across Uttar Pradesh, the saffron outfit is all set to hold a public meeting in Lucknow tomorrow to garner support for its campaign to build Ram temple in Ayodhya.
Ahead of their October 17 ayodhya programme, the VHP activists would hold a meeting in the state capital and later march through the city to drum up support for temple construction, Prabhu Narain Singh, in-charge of VHP and Uttaranchal, told here today. Bureau Report
