LF sweeps WB panchayat poll, TC-BJP suffer humiliating defeat
Kolkata, May 13: The Trinamool Congress-BJP combine tonight suffered a humiliating defeat in West Bengal`s three-tier panchayat election, which was swept by CPI(M)-led ruling Left Front capturing 15 of the 17 zilla parishads and making a clean sweep in panchayat samiti.

Congress sprang a surprise wresting Murshidabad zilla parishad from the marxists and giving a tough fight to them in Malda which elected a hung body. The front retained control in north and south 24 Parganas, Nadia, Burdwan, Howrah, Hooghly, Coochbehar, Purulia, East and West Midnapore, Birbhum, Jalpaiguri, Bankura, North and South Dinajpur zilla parishads. The left front won over 6,000 seats uncontested in the three-tier rural body. In the 60-member Murshidabad zilla parishad, Congress bagged 32 seats while the LF captured 27 seats of which CPI(M) alone won 21 seats. RSP bagged three and forward bloc one seat.
