Tokyo, Oct 05: Honda Motor, the world's largest two-wheeler maker, said it developed the world's first electronically controlled fuel injection system for 4-stroke 50 cubic centimeter engines ahead of schedule.
The PGM-FI engine is cleaner, lighter, costs less to run and has less moving parts than the standard 50cc motor, managing director Yasuo Ikenoya said.
Tokyo-based Honda, the only large Japanese automaker that also builds motorcycles, plans to install the engine in a new scooter being released next year, instead the end of 2005.
Motorcycle sales accounted for about 12 per cent of revenue in the year ended march. The maker of CD-dawn motorbikes plans to increase motorcycle sales by 12 per cent to 9.08 million units in the year ending march 31, 2004 as demand increases in Asia, where many people can't afford cars.
The new engine is 7 per cent more fuel efficient than the standard 2 valve, carburetor engine when the scooter is travelling at 30 kilometre per hour. Bureau Report
