Los Angeles, Oct 01: Millionaire socialite Arianna Huffington withdrew from California's turbulent gubernatorial race urging voters to shun her movie star rival Arnold Schwarzenegger. The outspoken Huffington, one of the more colourful characters in the eccentric line-up contesting the October 7 recall vote for governor, yesterday said she was pulling out to focus on keeping the "Terminator" out of office.

"I'm puling out and I'm going to concentrate every ounce of my time and energy in the next week working to defeat the recall because I realise that's the only way to defeat" Schwarzenegger, she told a television channel. The Greek-born environmental and social activist's announcement came a day after a new opinion poll showed the actor garnering 40 percent of votes, while she came in with just two per cent.

Schwarzenegger's rating shot up in the poll after he appeared in the only candidates' debate of his short and carefully-controlled campaign in which he spent much of his time exchanging sharp barbs with Huffington.

The striking 53-year-old ex-wife of a gay heir to an oil fortune has repeatedly attacked the neophyte Republican politician for pandering to special interest groups despite presenting himself as a political outsider. She said she would campaign across the state in the week ahead of the historic vote to convince voters to defeat the Republican-led bid to oust Davis in the recall vote to make sure the "Terminator" does not replace him.
