New Delhi, Aug 24: Inflation dipped for the sixth consecutive week plunging to this fiscal's lowest ever figure of 3.95 per cent for the week ended august 9 even as fruits and vegetable prices soared.
The point-to-point wholesale price index (WPI) inflation
fell to 29 weeks' low from the previous week's level of 3.96
per cent despite fuel and manufactured products' prices
remaining unchanged, and it was 3.15 per cent in the previous
year period.
The WPI, however, rose by 0.1 per cent to 173.5 points, mainly because of mass consumption primary articles becoming costlier, and the index was 166.9 points in the year-ago period.
The final inflation and WPI remained unaltered for the week ended June 14 as compared to their provisional figures of 4.97 per cent and 173.2 points.
Reserve Bank Governor Bimal Jalan had held inflation was under control and there was no turbulence.
Opposing setting any inflation target, Jalan had said, "There should be a range but one should not set a target as other countries do since Indian environment was different."
