Srinagar, Oct 20: The Centre has sanctioned Rs 174 crore for revival of tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir which would also create nearly 1.7 lakh employment opportunities in the state. Centre has sanctioned a package worth Rs 174 crore for revival of the state's tourism industry, J&K Tourism Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir told reporters here today.
The Minister said the package would provide direct job opportunities for 35,000 persons and indirect employment opportunities for another 1.34 lakh persons.
Of the total amount, Rs 77.63 crore will be provided as loan component, Rs 75.25 crore as interest subsidy and Rs 10.28 crore as capital subsidy to the people associated with tourism sector in the state, Mir said.
He said another Rs 12 crore have been sanctioned for completion of Institute of Mountaineering and Skiing and Development of ITDC property at Gulmarg.
He said tourist arrivals in the state were on the upswing and hoped that stray incidents of violence would not affect the industry in the next season.
In 1988, over seven lakh tourists visited the state, he said adding around 17,000 tourists were there in 2002-03 in J&K. This year, 1.75 lakh tourists have visited the state, besides 1.5 lakh Amarnath yatris, he said.
Militancy was a global phenomenon, Mir said adding there is no reason why tourism should become its casualty when it has not suffered in countries like Israel and Sri Lanka. Bureau Report
