New Delhi, July 25: India is deficient in agriculture production and the grains stocks with the government are only an accumulation of the past years, a top industry official has said. He also said India's edible oil imports are likely to jump to a mammoth seven million tonnes in two years.
If India was to shift land from grains to oilseeds and pulses, of which the country is an importer, the overall output of the former will go below the domestic requirement levels, CMD Cargill India Hardeep Singh said here.

Addressing an industry seminar, he said year to year surplus in grains production is only seven million tonnes which will be wiped out in the event of crop diversification.
He said India imports five million tonnes edible oil annually and to make good the shortage, land used for cultivation of 37 million tonnes grains will have to be diverted to oilseeds.
Similarly to bring 1.5 million tonnes of pulses import to zero, another seven million tonnes worth of land will have to be taken away from grain cultivation.
