New Delhi, Nov 21: The Supreme Court today showered
praise on Attorney General Soli J Sorabjee hailing him as
"champion of democracy" even though it was taking strong
exception to the Centre's affidavit defending the appointment
of a bureaucrat to head the competition commission.
The praises followed after Sorabjee pulled the government
out of a tight situation by stating that government would
delete a provision of Competition Commission Act which
provided that the high courts would be the executing courts
for the decrees passed by the Commission.
Appreciating the stand, a bench headed by Chief Justice V N Khare recalled the contribution made by Sorabjee in numerable cases to uphold the democratic norms of governance provided under the constitution.
"We know Sorabjee as the champion of democracy. The entire country respects him for that. The supreme court also respects him for that," Justice Kahre said.
