Pakistani military ruler General Pervez Musharraf was on Thursday urged in local editorials to consult opposition parties on his future political plans following his controversial victory in Tuesday's presidential referendum. ''Whatever its worth, the referendum was aimed at returning the country to full democracy,'' said Jang, the newspaper with largest circulation in the country.
Musharraf should prepare himself for ''a long, difficult period'', Jang said, asking him not to criticise the opposition parties himself as the controversy over his win ''can prove dangerous to the country''.
Islamabad's the nation said the voting in the referendum showed that Musharraf's allies could not create ''a large vote bank'' for him.
It said that ''instead of thrusting a highly centralised system in the name of so-called true democracy on the nation, the government should devote full attention to holding elections on time''.
