CPI(M) wrests Nabadwip LS, retains Vidyasagar assembly seat
Kolkata, June 11: The Trinamool Congress, its poll ally BJP, as also the Congress, suffered a rude jolt in the by-elections for Nabadwip (SC) Lok Sabha and Vidyasagar assembly seats in West Bengal held on Sunday, with the Left Front major CPI(M) notching up impressive victories in both the constituencies today.
Kolkata, June 11: The Trinamool Congress, its poll ally BJP, as also the Congress, suffered a rude jolt in the by-elections for Nabadwip (SC) Lok Sabha and Vidyasagar assembly seats in West Bengal held on Sunday, with the Left Front major CPI(M) notching up impressive victories in both the constituencies today.
CPI(M) caused a major upset to Trinamool Congress when it wrested Nabadwip (SC) parliamentary seat in Nadia district by a large margin of 98,800 votes and also retained the Vidyasagar assembly constituency in Kolkata upsetting the applecart of the Congress by 22,829 votes.
In the Nabadwip Lok Sabha seat, Alokesh Das (CPI-M), a leader of the party's youth wing DYFI, scored a thumping victory over his nearest rival Trinamool Congress' Abir Ranjan Biswas, son of late TC MP Ananda Mohan Biswas, in an eight-cornered contest.
Das polled 5,20,630 votes against Biswas' 4,21,830. Congress candidate Rajani Duloi, a former MLA, came third with 1,37,319 votes.
In 1999 Lok Sabha polls, Trinamool Congress had wrested this seat from CPI(M) by over 39,000 votes.
