Dehradun, July 27: Former Uttaranchal minister Harak Singh Rawat, against whom the cbi has filed a case of rape in the "unwed mother" scandal, has remained incommunicado since yesterday, family and police sources said today.
Immediately after hearing the news of registration of the case against him by the CBI, Rawat left for an undisclosed destination and there was no news from him since then, a family member told newspersons.
Rawat is believed to be camping in Delhi and making moves to secure anticipatory bail, the family member said, adding he was not traceable.
Police sources said the whereabouts of the former minister was not known.
Meanwhile, state congress leadership is understood to have decided to tread cautiously on the issue since any action against Rawat could prove too costly for the party-led government in the state which has only a wafer-thin majority in the assembly. Congress has only 36 MLAs in a house of 70.
Party sources said that this was the reason for the PCC executive which met yesterday to defer a decision on demands to expel Rawat from the party.
However, some senior leaders have sent a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi demanding Rawat's expulsion from the primary membership of the party. The letter is signed by six party office bearers including two general secretaries, the sources said.
Meanwhile, industry development minister Kishor Upadhaya called for convening a meeting of congress legislature party and state executive immediately to discuss the issue.
