Etawah (UP), June 11: Samajwadi Party today alleged Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri was not conforming to established democratic traditions following his virtual rejection of opposition parties' claims that Mayawati government has been reduced to a minority.
The Governor's statement, coming after almost a week after the opposition parties claimed that Mayawati government had been reduced to a minority and demanded that it be asked to prove its majority on the floor of the House, appeared to be influenced by the government, Samajwadi Party president, Mulayam Singh Yadav told newspersons here.
He said after the apex court verdict that the majority of a government should be proved on the floor of the Vidhan Sabha, there was no room for confusion on this count.
Recalling how the Governor had waited for the letter of support from RLD president Ajit Singh before inviting Mayawati to form her government, Yadav said after the withdrawal of support by his (Ajit Singh's) 14-member party, the government was clearly in minority.
Yadav said he would be returning to Delhi today where he would hold consultations with Congress president Sonia Gandhi to chalk out their future strategy.
Yesterday, the Governor had rejected the opposition - comprising the SP, Congress, Rashtriya Kranti Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal - demand of convening a special assembly session for a fresh trial of strength of Mayawati government and asked them to furnish proof of their claims.
