The second round of talks between the Indian and United States navy began on Wednesday aboard America's 7th fleet command ship with the accent on sharing vital intelligence information for the 'natural allies' to jointly counter terrorism. The Indo-US military-to-military engagement is being revived after a three-year void in the wake of sanctions after the May 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests.
The talks will focus on diverse military issues, besides joint training and exercises, counter-terrorism, intelligence, peace-keeping operations and disaster management.
Aimed at promoting closer cooperation between the defence forces of the two democracies, a meeting of the inter-army Executive Steering Group (ESG) is being held in New Delhi, while Chennai is the venue for the ESG navy dialogue.
The talks aboard the vessel 'USS Blue Ridge' berthed at the Chennai port, has Deputy Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral S V Gopalachari heading the Indian side and the US delegation led by Vice Admiral James W Metzger.
Interacting with mediapersons, who were given a guided tour of the ship, Vice Admiral Metzger said, ''There is a lot we can talk about and work together to achieve this objective,'' he said.
''The Indian Navy has a lot of knowledge and experience to share with us in promoting a common understanding on where the threat of terrorism is from and what it could be,'' he noted.
