Kolkata, Oct 11: Pappu Singh, dreaded gangster and one-time close associate of don Babloo Srivastav, was today arrested from a hideout in the northern part of the metropolis. Police arrested Singh, wanted in connection with several cases relating to kidnapping and extortion, from his hideout in the busy commercial hub of Posta area in the early hours, Deputy Commissioner of Police (central) Zulfikar Hasan said.
Singh, who had escaped from Bhuj jail in Gujarat during devastating earthquake two years ago, was arrested without any resistance as he was sleeping in a house, he said. Hasan said that no arms could be found on his possession.
He said that the police team conducted the raid after receiving an information that Singh had taken shelter in his relative's house in the congested Posta area.
Police were trying to ascertain if Singh had any sinister design to carry out in the city during the four-day ‘durga puja’ festival beginning tomorrow.
The police had already contacted the Gujarat police. Singh also had close links with Manjit Singh Mange, who gave a slip to the city police from state-run SSKM hospital in 2000 after his arrest in an injured condition following an abortive kidnap bid of a city businessman. Bureau Report
