Bangalore, Jan 19: The Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited, a corporation set up by the Karnataka government to implement ongoing Cauvery basin schemes on a fast track basis, today gave its administrative approval for 50 projects costing Rs 1,500 crore. Briefing reporters after the board meeting presided over by Chief Minister S M Krishna in his capacity as its chairman, Minister for Water Resources for Cauvery Basin M Shivanna said the schemes would be implemented within the 11.20 lakh acre limit set by the cauvery water dispute tribunal.

Major among them was Rs 702 crore Kabini lift irrigation project under the second stage that would benefit most parts of Mysore and the entire Chamarajanagar district with a potential to irrigate 94,434 hectares, he said. Rs 400 crore had already been spent on the Rs 1,233 crore Kabini project.

Clearance of the Kabini second stage, to be completed in three years, marked fulfilment of a nearly 25 year old demand, Shivanna and the Nigama managing director Thimmegowda said. Thimmegowda said the corporation had mobilised Rs 250 crore through bonds so far and would raise an equal sum during the current financial year and targetted to mop up Rs 1,500 crore each for the next three fiscals, thus raising Rs 5,000 crore to speed up works on the ongoing Cauvery basin schemes.

Shivanna said the 50 projects cleared today included 14 lift irrigation schemes.

The board also sanctioned Rs 10.50 crore for the Talacauvery and Bagamandala Development Authority set up by the government to renovate temples and take up other works to give a facelift at the origin of Cauvery in Kodagu district.
