Aizawl, July 29: Mizoram government is taking all possible steps to prevent illegal influx of foreigners through the 630 kms International Border, state home minister R Tlanghmingthanga told the assembly here today. Tlanghmingthanga's statement comes in the wake of xenophobic waves triggered by rape of a minor girl reportedly by a Myanmarese national at Vancy Hotel at Chanmari locality on July 17.

Deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of all the districts have been instructed to ascertain as to how many foreigners were living in their area illegally, he said, adding that a 'border management cell' has also been established at the state home department.
"Besides the check gate at Zokhawthar, efforts had been made to errect police check gates at Mizoram-Manipur-Myanmar Border village of N.E. KHAWDUNGSEI and Mizoram-Bangladesh-Tripura border villages of Bairabi and Kanhmum," he said.

The state government had convened a meeting of all non-governmental organisations to ensure that deportation of foreigners from the state be taken up as per law, the minister said. Chief minister Zoramthanga also convened a meeting of NGOs and church leaders today, he said.
