Imphal, July 22: A 45-day economic blockade is on at Imphal-Guwahati national highway 39, Imphal-Silchar National Highway 53 and parts of Imphal-Moreh highway in Manipur by a local tribal organisation to press their demand regarding employment for tribals, official sources said today. The blockade began midnight last night leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded at the border town of Moreh, the sources said. The effect of the blockade in the hill districts is yet to be known. Major stretch of the two highways, pass through hill districts of Senapati and Tamenglong in interior Manipur.
The movement for tribal people's rights Manipur in a statement said the organisation would continue the blockade till their demands for filling of vacant posts of teachers, improvement of medical facilities and other benefits for tribals in hills were fulfilled.
