Mumbai, Aug 17: "Are you hot enough?" This is the loud and blatant statement issued by People for Ethical Treatment to Animals inviting citizens to vote for the hottest vegetarian on their online poll.
Peta started an online poll to choose the hottest vegetarian on August 14. Film stars Amitabh Bachchan and Esha Deol were chosen as the hottest vegetarians alive by voters last year. However, the competition is getting hotter and steamier this year, since the list of nominees this time includes President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The contest is on for a month. Speaking with The Asian Age, Peta director Anuradha Sawhney said, "We received a tremendous response to the contest last year. More than 15,000 people voted for Bachchan and Deol. We are anticipating more voters this year."
Besides the President, the nominees this year include supermodel Yana Gupta, Manpreet Brar, Alicia Silverstone, Brigitte Bardot, Kim Basinger, Ruby Bhatia, Mahima Chaudhary, Juhi Chawla, Esha Deol, Aditi Govitrikar, Diya Mirza and Pamela Anderson.
Mahesh Bhatt, Anil Ambani, Amitabh Bachchan, Alec Baldwin, Pheroze Gandhi, Greg Chappel, R Madhavan, Hemant Trivedi, Harsha Bhogle, Tobey Macguire, Richard Gere and John Abraham feature among the male contenders.
Ms Sawhney said, "The criteria for choosing the celebrities was that all of them had to be vegetarians. Also the star value attached to them was considered." She explained that the contest is one of the methods adopted by Peta to convey a message to people that being vegetarian is hot and meat eating is not.
She said, "There is no hotter combination than passion (towards animals) and compassion. The trend towards a healthy vegetarian lifestyle has caught on in a big way."
