Coimbatore, June 24: Congress Democratic Forum leader and former union finance minister P Chidambaram today said that a confrontationist approach on the Cauvery would not yield results and instead aggravate bitterness between the two riparian states.

Tamil Nadu had not benefitted from a similar attitude towards Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu on the Krishna River water some years ago, he told reporters here. Approaching Supreme Court or boycotting the Cauvery Water Authority would not serve any purpose and only a wise and sensible approach could lead to useful solution, particularly when Tamil Nadu was in distress, he added.
Chidambaram said that ultimate losers and sufferers through a hostile approach would be the Tamil Nadu farmers. When asked about the Centre's role on the issue, he said "less said is better about the Centre which is ineffective on the issue."
if Centre failed to convene a meeting of the authority, the state should compel and seek to convene it to discuss the issue threadbare, he added.
On the question for an all party meeting, Chidambaram said that it was left to the chief minister.
