Shillong, Aug 08: Two additional companies of Central Reserve Police Force would be deployed in Meghalaya during the Independence Day celebrations in view of the "bandh" called by an outlawed organisation, a top police official said.
The deployment of Central Paramilitary Force would be in addition to the existing strength of state police and other security agencies, director general of police l Sailo told.

Sailo however refused to give the exact date on which the force would become operational.
The DGP said although no decision was taken to deploy either Army or Assam Rifles, they would be called "if such a need arises".
Asked if an alert had been sounded in various police outposts in the state, Sailo replied in the negative.

Although Chief Minister D D Lapang Lapang had appealed to the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council not to call a "bandh" on the day and allow the children to rejoice, the ultras went ahead with their move of calling a 24-hour strike from August 14 evening.
The Lapang government was trying to ensure better participation of school students and people at large in the Independence Day programmes. 30 schools have responded to the appeal and agreed to participate in the programmes, official sources claimed.
