The latest quake occurred at 5:38 am (0208 IST) in the pacific off the southeastern coast of Hokkaido Island, the meteorological agency said.
Its focus was located 30 km below sea-level, some 750 km north of Tokyo, the agency said. No tidal wave warning was issued.
