Forget Congress-BJP to Maya: The Asian Age
New Delhi, Sept 23: After snapping ties with the Bahujan Samaj Party, the BJP on Monday once again made moves to woo the outfit led by Ms Mayawati.
New Delhi, Sept 23: After snapping ties with the Bahujan Samaj Party, the BJP on Monday once again made moves to woo the outfit led by Ms Mayawati.
BJP general secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi, Mr Madan Lal Khurana, held a 45-minute meeting with Ms Mayawati. The meeting focused on the forthcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha polls.
This was the first meeting between Ms Mayawati and the BJP after the former snapped ties with the saffron camp. The meeting took place at Batra Hospital, where Mr Naqvi and Mr Khurana had gone to meet ailing senior BSP leader Kanshiram. RSS joint general secretary Madan Devi, who was expected to be present at the meeting, failed to attend following the death of senior Sangh leader Morepant Pingley at Nagpur. Sources disclosed that the meeting with Ms Mayawati was pre-planned. It was learnt that the BJP asked her "not to tie up with the Congress" during the forthcoming Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Delhi. The leaders also debated options of a reunion during the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Despite the BJP leaders’ claims that the meeting was "coincidental," sources revealed that when Mr Naqvi reached the hospital at 2.15 pm, Ms Mayawati rushed in within 10 minutes.
It was learnt that the BJP has been apprehensive of a Congress-BSP tieup during the forthcoming Assembly polls. The party fears that a Congress-BSP alliance in Madhya Pradesh could damage its prospects in that state. Sensing that the consolidation of the Samjawadi Party in Uttar Pradesh was going to hit the BJP in the long run, the leaders also discussed ways to reunite during the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
Apart from the BJP, Ms Mayawati is also aware that with Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav at the helm of affairs in UP, she "would need Central help to sort things out for herself." Reports of her amassing property and the CBI breathing down her neck over the Taj issue has caused considerable concern for the BSP supremo. Sources disclosed that she could "bargain for Central help" to get her out of the "mess."

For the record, Mr Naqvi said that they had gone to Batra Hospital to wish Mr Kanshiram a speedy recovery.
