Coimbatore, Apr 12: Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) has proposed to set up high-tech weaving centres across the country. The proposal in this regard has been submitted to the Union Government for approval, as part of cluster development, PDEXCIL chairman Senthil Kumar told reporters here last night.
With a likely huge investment of Rs.200 crore to Rs.300 crore, each centre would have 1,000 looms, either shuttleless or automatic, with six minimum looms per shed, he said
Stating that the council had set a target of opening at least six centres in the next one year, Senthil Kumar said it was proposed to set one centre at Palladam, near Coimbatore, which would be a 'model centre'.
Being a facilitator, PDEXCIL would extend all possible assistance and a five-member committee has been constituted, to help the entrepreneurs in design, technology and marketing aspects, he said.
Since technology upgradation fund scheme had not picked up on the expected lines in powerloom sector, it was under active consideration of the government to come out with a workshed scheme under powerloom package as announced in the budget.
