Under pressure from the opposition, Bangladesh government has deferred decision on exporting natural gas and is seeking the opinion of experts on the controversial issue. State minister for energy and mineral resources A K M Osharaff Hossain, who had said a decision on the issue would be taken on November 15, has suggested that the government may take few months to announce its gas export policy.
He said the government was seeking opinion from experts both on technical and financial aspects before reaching on a decision.
An 11-party alliance has announced a half-day countrywide general strike on November 15 to protest the proposed gas export and is holding meetings to garner support.
Hossain said a technical committee has been formed to assess the quantum of gas in the country amid conflicting reports of reserve situation.
