South India’s talented actress Revathy is ready with the new role. That of a director. Revathy is making her directorial debut in a multi-lingual film titled Mitr — My Friend. The starting point for the project was during one of Revathy’s visits to the United States of America. The film is an attempt to find out answers to the real situation faced by the Indian community in the US and their attempts to fit in family values in the midst of all-encompassing materialism. Mitr — My Friend explores the emotions of an Indian family, living in America for nearly two decades. Prithvi (Nasir Abdullah) is a software engineer of Indian origin, born and brought up in the land of dollars. When he wants to marry, he decides on a girl from a small town in India, perhaps to feel the warmth of his roots. His wife Lakshmi (Shobana) has even seen a big city in India, let alone America.
She agrees to marry him with stars in her eyes. But once she lands in the US of A, there is a series of cultural shocks for her. Lakshmi tries to insulate herself from it, and when her daughter is born, tries to forget the outside world by caring for her family. Problems begin when the daughter Divya (Preeti Vissa) grows up into a teenager. The girl’s friends are mostly Americans and she adapts herself completely to the American way of life, a restricting mother at home notwithstanding. The daughter is annoyed with her mother who remains steeped in ‘foolish Indian traditions’ as she calls it. On her part, the mother cannot understand her daughter’s outlook towards life. The father, meanwhile, is busy putting his heart and soul into earning the greenbacks. A completely lonely Lakshmi now pines for her roots. In a chat room, she comes across a stranger from her native place. The two start chatting, and soon there is a very deep bond between them. Lakshmi confesses all her confusion and emotions to her ‘friend’ and the friend is very understanding. Bureau Report
