Kohima, May 16: Defying strong opposition and threats from two underground organisations, the people here today thronged the local ground and celebrated the birth centenary of the pioneer of Naga political struggle Angami Z Phizo amidst tight security. Tight security blanket was thrown with heavy deployment of state police and Assam rifles personnel in and around the Kohima local ground since last evening after NSCN(I-M) abducted the secretary of the birth centenary celebration committee and noted writer Kaka D Iralu asserting that the celebration on this day was the ''complete distortion'' of Naga history.
Naga National Council (NNC) also opposed the celebration and asked people not to participate in the meeting at the local ground, saying Phizo's family was responsible for the signing of the ''infamous'' Shillong Accord in 1975 and during his 45 years of leadership only achievement was negative tribalism among the Nagas. Phizo's birthday celebration embroiled into controversy with certain people observing it on May 4 and some on May 16, the Naga ''plebiscite day. Organisers said even Phizo's passport mentioned May 16 as his birthday.
Meanwhile, leaders of Naga underground organisation in separate messages, called upon the Nagas to uphold the importance of the plebiscite day. On this day in 1951, 99 per cent Nagas put their thumbs in favour of Naga independence at a plebiscite conducted by them NNC president Angami Z Phizo, who died in London in 1990 after staying there for over 30 years.
