Kathmandu, Oct 17: A group of Maoists looted cash and travellers cheques worth Rs 17,89,956 from a rural branch of Nepal SBI Bank, an Indo-Nepal joint venture, in Bhandarik area, 220 km west of Kathmandu. Three unidentified gunmen entered the bank at 2 pm yesterday and looted the money at gun point after disarming a security guard, bank manager Shisir Pradhan said adding, the accused managed to escape with the cash.
They looted Indian currency worth Rs 3,73,800, Nepali currency amounting to Rs 13,31,156 and 17 travellers' cheques of 5,000 denominations, he said.
This is the first time that the Maoists looted an Indian joint venture bank in the country. State bank of India has 50 percent share in the Nepal SBI Bank.
Investigations are currently on and some suspects have been arrested in this connection, he said.
