Govt invested Rs 17,414 cr in national highways till Oct
New Delhi, Dec 03: Government has spent Rs 17,414 crore till October 2003 for the ambitious Rs 54,000 crore National Highways Project, which is expected to be completed as per schedule.

"The targeted time for completion of golden quadrilateral
component of the National Highways Development Project is
December 2004, and for the north-south and east-west corridors
is December 2007. It is expected that these targets will be
substantially adhered to," Minister of State for Roads,
P Radhakrishnan, informed the Lok Sabha today.
He said the 4-6 laning of all NHDP roads estimated to cost Rs 54,000 crore, out of which government has sanctioned Rs 30,300 crore for NHDP phase-I and another Rs 2,573 crore for east-west corridor.
"Total expenditure incurred by NHAI upto October 2003 on the NHDP phase-I and other projects is Rs 17,414.19 crore," the minister said.
He said progress of some of portion of Delhi-Kolkata section of Golden Quadrilateral has been affected due to law and order problems, difficulty in obtaining quarries for aggregates and poor performance of some contractors.
The Centre is taking up issues with state government and regularly monitoring the work, he added.
While dismissing claims of a highway linking Assam with Bhutan, he said an additional Rs 28.47 crore has been allocated for construction of Bhutan portion of the Pathsala-Nangalam road.
Radhakrishnan said the government targets to mop up Rs 9,000 crore from cess on petrol and diesel this fiscal of which Rs 2,874 has been mopped up till August.
