New Delhi, Nov 12: An eight-member Indian polo team will visit Pakistan to participate in the World Cup qualifiers to be held in Lahore from December 4 to 11.
The team, comprising Samir Suhag, Samsher Ali, Vishal Singh, Lt Ravi Rathore, simran Shergill, Bhawani Singh Kalvi and Basheer Ali, will have to contend with last edition's
runners-up Australia, hosts Pakistan, Iran and Singapore for the two World Cup berths from the Asia-Africa-Oceania group, an Indian Polo Association official told reporters here today.
New Zealand and South Africa have not confirmed their participation and were likely to pull out citing security fears, he said. The world championship is to be held in France in August 2004. Team member Rathore exuded confidence that the Indians, who finished eighth in the last edition at Melbourne, Australia, will qualify for the World Cup.
"We trained for one-and-a-half month in Argentina and then again for a month in England... We are confident of qualifying for the World Cup," he said. The team is being coached by Juan Fernandes Ocanpo of Argentina.
