Michigan, Aug 09: The Ford Motor Company has said that it is recalling 1.7 million sport-utility vehicles to replace potentially faulty bolts on the driver seat and check for malfunctioning speed control cables. The voluntary recalls covers almost half a million 2001 mercury mountaineers, ford explorers, Ford explorer sport and sport trac vehicles fitted with cruise control systems.

Ford has received 14 complaints saying the cruise control function has failed and motorists have been unable to switch it off when the vehicle is under power.
The cable may be wearing out prematurely on some of these vehicles, because of heat or contamination, according to Ford spokesman Glenn Ray yesterday.

Additionally, the automaker wants to recall 1.6 million 1998-2001 ford explorer and mercury mountaineer vehicles and explorer sport and 2001-2002 sport trac models with high-back seats following complaints that the bolt securing the driver's reclining seat back to the seat frame has come loose or fractured.

In two cases, the bolt fractured and the seat back flopped backwards completely, according to Ray.
No accidents or injuries have been reported in relation to either of these product issues, the company said, but in relation to the seat bolt, "there is the potential of the bolt fracturing completely, forcing the seat to fully recline unexpectedly, and the driver could potentially lose contact with the steering wheel and/or foot pedals."

About 1.5 million of the vehicles recalled were sold in the United States, with the remainder sold in Canada, Mexico, US territories such as Guam or Puerto Rico and Europe.
