Lahore, Mar 24: Pakistan got an early breakthrough today as it picked wickets of both the openers before the end of 15 overs. Mohammad Sami got the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar for a mere 37 runs off 48 balls. Sachin was caught behind by Moin Khan.
Pakistan had earlier claimed its first victim in Virender Sehwag when he was caught behind by Moin Khan on Shabbir Ahmed ball after making 20 runs off 22 balls. India were 39/1 at the end of seven overs.
Pakistani captain Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and put India into bat in the fifth and final ODI at Gaddafi stadium.
Indian captain Sourav Ganguly maintained his record of losing toss against Paksitan, this was straight for the eighth time. Sourav Ganguly was happy with his counterpart’s decision,“I would have batted in any case”.
Pakistan has made one change in the last game’s team, Taufeeq Umar replaces Shahid Afridi. India take on Pakistan in the fifth and final one-dayer of the Samsung Cup. The winner of the final match of the one-day series between India and Pakistan will “officially” be recognised as the better of the two sides in the ICC ODI championship table.
If the Pakistan can make home advantage count in the day-night match it will hold on to fifth place with an improved ratings of 108 while India will be in seventh place behind England with a rating of 105. A tied final match will leave Pakistan with a one-point lead over India. India’s track record in the deciding matches since NatWest trophy final at Lords in 2002 is indeed nothing to rave about. India has lost all the last four finals that it had played and would be looking forward to reverse the trend this time. India have failed to win a one-day series in Pak in five attempts since the 1978-79 season. On the last tour in 1997-98, India lost 1-2.
India won the Friday’s game at Lahore and leveled the series.
Both teams will be under pressure to win the match when the Titans clash at Gaddafi Stadium today. But their bowling worries are still dogging them. Speedster Shoiab Akhtar’s bout of illness during the crucial fourth one-dayer against India is disturbing the Pakistan team management, which desperately needs the bowler to be in the top form for the deciding one-dayer.
Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and coach Javed were apparently upset over the latest illness to their strike bowler as they struggled to explain his absence from the field in the middle of India’s run chase on Friday.
Both teams are expected to retain the squad of the last match.
The excitement from this match can be easily seen in the entire city of Lahore as the fans from India are coming in large numbers to cheer for their team. Teams:
