The Tamil Nadu police has formed a special CB-CID wing to investigate nine specific cases against elusive sandalwood smuggler Veerappan and his gang.
The wing comprising an additional superintendent, three deputy superintendents and five inspectors would be headquartered at Gobichettipalayam in neighbouring erode district, where the outlaw had committed numerous crimes, police said.

“The wing had been formed as the local police found it very difficult to devote full attention to the cases against the outlaw in view of the routine work pressure,” they said.
Over the last 25 years, Veerappan had committed numerous crimes like abduction of forest officials and others and killing police personnel in the district forest belts.
