Madurai, May 13: Popular Hindi comedian Devang Patel, who has regaled audiences with his comic videos and outlandish lyrics, now hopes to create an awareness among the increasing number of meat eating people in India, about the sufferings the animals undergo before they are killed. A new advertisement, brought out by the People for Ethical Treatment for Animals (PETA) sees Devang Patel singing in praise of vegetarianism. The comedian advises his fans to "go veg as meat stinks" and says that "sometimes humour is the best way to get people thinking about serious issues like how animals suffer, for their dinner." A press release from PETA said that it was regrettable to note that meat consumption was growing in developing countries like India, while people in advanced nations like the USA were switching to a meat free diet. India, it said, had the highest rate of coronary heart disease, mostly caused by "wide adoption of a high-fat lifestyle." The release also says that Indian abattoirs regulary discharged untreated waste into streams and rivers, which seeps into groundwater, thereby affecting people. It also said that health inspectors hardly ever rejected meat unfit for consumption, "no matter how diseased it is."
