Imphal, Sept 19: A local women's body has demanded replacement of Assam Rifles personnel deployed at the border town of Moreh in Manipur's Chandel district by India Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel. President of the Kha-Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup (South-East Women's Association of Manipur) president Kangabam Keina Leima told mediapersons yesterday that a Kuki youth and two Meiteis were killed on September 11 at Moreh in separate incidents by unidentified gunmen. Minutes after the Kuki youth was killed, Assam Rifles personnel harassed and tortured people belonging to a particular community, Leima said adding that central paramilitary forces remained silent when the two Meiteis were killed in the evening that day.
Leima said Moreh is inhabited by people from different communities and demanded immediate replacement of Assam Rifles personnel by IRB personnel. Official sources said the authorities had earlier imposed indefinite prohibitory orders and night curfew at the border town of Moreh following the tense situation after the September 11 incident.
Sources said the prohibitory orders and night curfew had now been lifted following improvement in the situation and added that security personnel had been asked to remain alert.
Sources refused to comment when asked why Assam Rifles personnel allegedly harassed and tortured people belonging to particular community after the killing of a Kuki youth by unidentified gunmen. Bureau Report
