Carrying forward India`s campaign against state-sponsored terrorism, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Saturday called for coordinated efforts of the international community to counter "some states" following a policy of sponsoring terrorists and sheltering them by firmly rebuffing any ideological, political or religious justification for it and demanded recognition of India`s larger role in Afghanistan crisis. Projecting India`s role in the current international campaign against the scourge, he said New Delhi fully supported the campaign against terrorist networks in Afghanistan but hoped that it would reach an early and successful conclusion.
Addressing the special debate in the 56th session of UN General Assembly that opened Saturday, Vajpayee said "some states follow a policy of sponsoring and sheltering terrorists. They can only be countered through closely coordinated efforts of the international community. "We in India know from our own bitter experience that terrorists develop global networks driven by religious extremism. Their operations are supported by drug trafficking, money laundering and arms smuggling," he said adding it required the political will of the international community to implement the UN Security Council resolutions to force strict curbs on sources of financing for terrorists and denying them safe havens for training, arming and operation.
