Mumbai, Mar 03: Former alleged gangster-turned-politician and president of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS), Arun Gawli was arrested along with his party corporater Sunil Ghate under the Maharashtra Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act for alleged destruction of railway property. Gawli, who had announced his intentions of contesting the coming Lok Sabha elections from the Mumbai south-central constituency, was arrested by the Agripara police station here. He was later released on bail, police said.
The Bombay High Court yesterday dismissed a petition filed on Gawli's behalf by ABS's state unit president mahendra bagwe seeking a week's notice before the police arrested him on any charges until after the election. Gawli who once ran his underworld operations from the Dagdi Chawl in Mumbai later formed the Akhil Bharatiya Sena in 1996.
