New Delhi, June 05: Communication between normal
people and deaf and dumb has now become easier with
development of a device which converts English language into
signs and displays it on a screen.
Text and Sign Support Assistance (TESA) helps deaf and
dumb communicate with normal people with lot more ease. The
system is currently being used in some post offices in London,
a report in a British magazine `Britain-Today` said.
The system, developed by scientists at the School of Information Systems at East anglian University in collaboration with a post office and a private company called `Tele-Virtual` in Britain, captures different types of sounds and accent, converts them into sign language and shows it on the screen to help deaf and dumb understand what was said to them.
They are also trying to covert Indian languages such as Hindi and Punjabi into sign language to make it popular in India.
It also takes care of the syntax as people say the same thing in a different manner, the report said adding to overcome the problem, they developed an `intelligent` software which understands the meaning of different words.
`The Royal National Institute for Deaf People` which has expertise in the problems of deaf and dumb took opinions of such people while developing the system, the report said.
To replicate the sign language and record facial expressions on a screen , scientists used motion sensors and optical tracking systems. All these actions were then fed into the computer`s memory, it said.
TESA is currently being used at five post offices and would be used at the `Science Museum` in London. Bureau Report
