New Delhi, Nov 14: Congress today reacted sharply to the VHP decision to go ahead with its proposed yatra in Gujarat and said it was for the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polls in the state. "VHP believes in confrontation, violence and communal politics. Free and fair elections are not possible in such circumstances. It is for the Election Commission to see that free and fair polls were conducted in Gujarat'" AICC general secretary Ambika Soni told reporters.
Stating that it was the responsibility of the state government to maintain law and order, Soni said free and fair election were possible only when there is peace and social order.
Stating that the BJP and VHP were two sides of the same coin, she said they were trying to polarise the society using religion for narrow political ends. VHP had yesterday announced its activists would defy the EC ban on its proposed yatra in Gujarat and court arrest. Bureau Report
