The last quarter of 2001 turned out to be the quarter of doom for almost all PC makers. Except for HCL Insys and assembled segment, all PC makers, like Compaq, IBM, Dell, Zenith, H-P, Wipro, Vintron, Acer and Toshiba all experienced negative sales growth compared to the corresponding quarter last year. Sequentially, the picture was slightly better with only Compaq, HCL and Toshiba experiencing increase in sales over Q3 of 2001. Zenith and Dell posted the worst performance, while HCL Infosystems and the assembled computer segment posted the best sales growth in the last quarter of 2001, on an annual growth basis. While Zenith posted a growth of -44.6 per cent over the sales of the corresponding quarter in 2000, Dell posted a dismal -37.6 per cent growth in sales over the same period, according to IDC figures for 2001. Compaq’s sales growth in Q4 2001 over the corresponding quarter last year was -9.8 per cent, for IBM, it was -9.3 per cent, H-P showed -29 per cent growth, Wipro posted 16.1 per cent and Vintron posted -15.9 per cent growth.
