New Delhi, Apr 26: After the bus and auto-taxi fare hikes, Delhiites may have to shell out more to travel by the recently launched metro rail beginning September, subject to clearance from a special panel. "The current fares on the metro are just promotional and 20 per cent less than suggested by the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER)," Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director E Sreedharan told reporters here today.
The Metro fares would be hiked by 10 per cent when the Tis Hazari-Tri Nagar sector becomes operational in September this year, he said, adding that the tickets were likely cost a rupee more than the current Rs four-Rs seven slab.
The NCAER had, in its report on Metro fares, suggested a certain amount and DMRC had introduced promotional fares that were 20 per cent less than the actual ones.
A committee, headed by a senior judge, would be constituted soon and DMRC would put forth a proposal on fare hike before the same, he said.
Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit inspected a 11 km underground section of the Metro Rail.
Dikshit was accompanied by city transport minister Ajay Maken and health minister A K Walia.
Dmrc plans to commission the Tiz Hazari-Tri Nagar line by September this year, followed by the Tri Nagar-Rithala line in March next year. Bureau Report
